Examples are artificial vitreous body endowed with internal and superficial nanostructures, as
well as microstructured punctum plugs combined with swelling hydrogels and microencapsulated
supports for drugs.
In addition to the biocompatibility of the materials, the artificial vitreous body has be
stabilized by scaffolding structures which do not affect the optical requirements. The
dimensioning depends on the wave lengths of the visible light, and the internal configuration
has to avoid any loss by light scattering.
Investigations and optimization of the transport and the adhesion performance are carried out
by impedance spectroscopy and crystal microbalance measurements. Additionally, the
research and the development of the ophthalmic devises are accomplished by cytobiological
tests.
